Honeymoon Road Trip
Our honeymoon in May 2015 was a road trip through California. One of our favourite days as newlyweds was spent at the Devils Postpile National Monument and Rainbow Falls. As we were spending three nights in Mammoth Lakes, it was only about a 20 to 30-minute drive from our hotel in the village to the parking area for the Devils Postpile. Somewhat surprisingly for the US, there is no entrance fee! In peak season however, there is a paid shuttle bus service from the village etc to alleviate traffic congestion.
We woke early the morning after our slightly chaotic arrival in Lofoten. Correction … Nigel woke early the following morning to the cry of seagulls and bright sunshine flooding through the window. He quickly dressed, left Martha dozing and headed out with his camera into the crisp Arctic morning. We had noticed a distinct aroma of fish in the air when we arrived and sure enough about 50 metres from the hotel were numerous drying racks, many of which were laden with cod drying out. View Post
After Nigel’s traumatising first skiing experience, he was ready for some luxury. In part four of our Arctic Norway Road (and Sea) Trip it’s finally time for us to board the gorgeous Hurtigruten Ship Midnatsol. We only had one night on board and we certainly made the most of every aspect. Including the various 15-minute stopovers in random little towns.
Welcome on Board
After a busy day of skiing in Tromsø we left our hotel at midnight. It was only a short walk to get to the Hurtigruten terminal and we were happy to see our ship, the Midnatsol, waiting for us. It certainly looked more cruise ship than a ferry with its modern design and a foyer which even had glass elevators. We left our bags in our cabin and went to explore the ship before our 1.30am departure. There were numerous nice lounge areas and up on deck there were even two jacuzzis. It was while we were up on deck that Nigel noticed an unusual band of green light in the sky rising up from Tromsø. It could only be one thing, the Northern Lights! We watched as it became a little brighter and then began to move about in the sky and by now some other passengers were watching on excitedly and trying to take photographs of it. View Post
